The Hello Molly Team Tries Menstrual Cups!

What made you decide to try the Hello Cup?

Over the years, I’ve dealt with having a heavy period and have always used tampons and liners to make it more bearable. I’m continually going through boxes of tampons per cycle and would typically have to change every 3 hours. The concept of being able to use the Hello Cup comfortably for 8 hours appealed to me and grew my interest in the product.

What were your first impressions visually?

I received the small Hello Cup, in the colour Fuschia and instantly thought the product was super cute and soft.

What and how was your experience using the menstrual cup?

The first time I used the Hello Cup, I was very anxious; the idea of using a stringless cup was all very new to me. I thought it would get lost, insertion would hurt, or that I wouldn’t be able to take it out, which intimidated me.

The first step was to sterilize the cup, so I placed it in a cup of boiling water for exactly 3 minutes. To ease my thoughts, I decided to insert the cup while having a warm shower, which is a great way to relax the muscles. I folded the cup in a tight rolly shape and inserted it as I would a tampon. To my surprise, insertion was unbelievably easy and pain-free- I couldn’t feel the cup and had no discomfort while the product was in.

Throughout use, I wore a liner just in case and kept the product in for exactly 8 hours. The whole day I didn't experience any leaking, which I’m super happy about.

The first few times, removal was slightly tricky, as I wasn’t sure how much pressure to use while taking the product out. I used my pointer finger to push down on the side of the cup and another finger to pull on the stem slowly. It required a lot of wiggles, although I got there in the end, completely pain-free.

What are your overall thoughts on the menstrual cup? Would you recommend it to our customers?

I love this product and will continue using it during future cycles. Much like tampons, this is something you need to practice and gain confidence in, but it will be worth it in the end. I would highly recommend it, especially to individuals with medium to heavy periods.

What made you decide to try the Hello Cup?

I'm a naturally forgetful person and prefer tampons over pads, so I often leave them in for longer periods than advised. The concept of being able to use a period product without having to change frequently, and be sustainable for the environment sounded appealing to me. So I gave it ago.

What were your first impressions visually?

Visually, I was a little intimidated as I was unsure how I was meant to get the cup up there. However, the colour was so cute and soft to the touch.

What and how was your experience using the menstrual cup?

It was daunting. I tried inserting it before I went to work. As recommended on the instruction box, I sterilised the Hello Cup for about four minutes in hot water before use and decided to insert after a shower. My first attempts to insert the cup were difficult, and I couldn't quite master the punch-fold technique while inserting. After two hours of wear, I began to leak and experienced uncomfortable internal chafing so I decided to remove it. This proved difficult and actually hurt once I removed the cup from my vagina. After researching the Hello Cup brand, I realised I used a size too big as I'm naturally petite. I also removed the cup using the toggle instead of gripping at the base of the cup which is something you should NOT do! Hello Cup stresses knowing your body size before application to avoid leaking and discomfort.

This didn't put off my experience. For my second day of my cycle, I used the extra small Hello Molly cup, which is softer than the size S. I had no issues with leaking and found inserting much easier and didn't experience uncomfortable chafing. As the size XS was more flexible and softer, inserting and removing the cup was much easier. I also found I could grip the base more firmly when I was breaking the seal to remove.

What are your overall thoughts on the menstrual cup? Would you recommend it to our customers?

I do like this product and I would definitely recommend it to our customers. If you're removing in the toilet or shower, menstrual cup is kept in one place and washed away easily! Much more hygienic and practical compared to pads and tampons. No more smelly disposable bags!

Much like wearing tampons, you'll definitely need some practice and gain confidence in application. Every method is personal and finding the one that works for you is a bit of trial and error. If you're a forgetful person like moi, it's something to look into! I would also recommend really knowing your body type first. If you're unsure, purchase two sizes and experiment!
