 WHAT TO WEAR

Now, apparently the day is based around a horse race, when we all know it’s just a day to chuck a sickie, buy a new frock and stick out our pinky finger when drinking champagne out of a plastic cup. So keep reading to check out the do's and don'ts when it comes to trackside glamour - get ready to slay with the best Melbourne Cup attire.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

There's no such thing as OTT when it comes to Cup Day. You could quite literally support a bucket on your head and everyone would just go along with it. However, if you want to stand out for all of the RIGHT reasons, opt for classic lace, intricate eyelet fabrics and ruffle detailing.

EMBRACE THE EXTRA

This is not the time to plain jane, we repeat This. Is. Not. The. Time. So go hard or go home honey. Stepping out of your comfort zone when it comes to the millinery department is a big yes from us. Afraid of colour? Opt for a black floral print dress that has enough femininity to match the day without being too loud!

FLUID SILHOUETTES

If there's a time and a place to play with pastel hues it's Cup Day. Don't be afraid to take your race day to new lengths with a floaty maxi. Pro: Forget having to shave your legs.

MILLINERY YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO WEAR

Now all you have to do it choose..

THE DO'S + DONT'S

- Choose your footwear wisely. Nothing screams tacky like someone with heels in hand. Try wear in your shoes before the big day and you'll thank us later!

- If you want to avoid the crowds and barefoot fillies, stay away from general admission. If you can sneak a pass into Members you'll be laughing.

- Remember it's a horse race, not a race to see who can pass out first, so like all good stayers, pace yourself. I know it might seem un-Australian not to take advantage of the mid-week drinking, but no one wants to learn if your race day preparations included a Brazilian or not.
